Well, its been a while since I posted anything. I have not done
too much to the site lately, but I did finally get the text jokes
working properly with the help of Blade at
CompSci.ca. Thanks a bunch
Blade. I still have to do a bit of work on the formatting so it
displays how I want it too, but more content is posted now as the
basic system is working.
It was a very busy start to school this year, not so much class
work, but everything else. I'm head of CUTC Queen's and there is
tons to do with that. I just help my housemate format his computer
after all other attemps to fix it failed. That was fun:)
I'm very happy to be going back to the pool regularly now. Also,
intramurals have started up so I'm fairly active again which I love.
My ankle is not totally better from the summer, but I'm working on it.
I'll try to post some more exciting details soon. |

| Destruction of an old hard drive |
| Posted by: Adam - 2004-10-10 |
So, sometime near the start of the summer I brought my mom's old
computer up to my place. After I got my new hard drive, I took out the
one that was in my mom's old computer, and put in my spare 40gig.
Even thought my mom's old drive had been formatted, she wanted to
make sure that nothing could be recovered. Well, I've had it sitting
around for a while now, and I was bored tonight...
I took a pair of pliers to it. What ensured was less boredom for
about a 30 minute period while I destroyed whatever was not very
firmly attached. I ripped off the IDE connection and power connection.
I then went to work on the circuit board on the bottom. I could not
get the screws out, so I simply started tearing pieces off of the board.
When I got close to one of the screws, I simply ripped the the board
out from around them. It was fun:)
I figure that the only way to even have a hope in hell of retrieving
anything from the drive now, is to open it up, take the platters out,
put them in a new casing, and then hope to be able to recover anything
which was not written over when I temporarily installed another OS.
Another night, when I am once again bored, I will take the screws
out and get at the platters and cut them up or something. |

Well, I had one midterm last night. It did not end up going as
well as I thought at the time, but it was not horrible. Live and
learn. My philosophy class received an unexpected extention on
our essay in class also. That was a welcome change to be sure.
It will make today far less painfull.
This terms intramurals have been going well. The COMPSA
volleyball team won last night. Ultimate has been a blast, we
are waiting to hear on when our playoff games will start. In soccer
we are tops of our division which is nice. The team has really come
together this year for our final run. The only one which has not gone
according to plan is innertube water polo (don't knock it until you
try it!). Its simply due to the fact that we have not had a chance
to play a game yet! There are a variety of reasons for this. It
simply could not be helped. Hopefully we will get a couple of games
in yet, and there is the winter league for us to dominate;)
COMPSA is slowly coming together. There is still a pile of work
to do. As this is our first year of existance we are kind of trying
to find our way and figure things out. I am planning on writing up
a bit of a report on some of the things that I think we should look
at. We need to revise our constitution very badly. I wish we had
had more time to work on it last year but that is life. Its not
bad, it just needs work. The thing that is bugging me the most
with COMPSA right now is communication. People are a bit too eager
and are flooding my inbox with e-mails which I don't need. People
need to learn when to hit reply instead of reply-all. Don't get me
wrong, we need strong communication, its just that we need to control
it for it to be useful at all. What I would like to see happen is
us create a forum, one for exec only, and one for everyone, so that
we can discus things in a more organized way between meetings. It is
one of the things I will include in my 'report'. However, the first
order of business is getting the new website up. I gave the webmaster
a subdomain so that he can test his new site as wherever we are
currently being hosted can not support any scripting languages.
Ok, that is enough rambling for now. Happy Halloween everyone! |
